Adding doubles and Writing about what we know

We have been continuing with our Daily 5 literacy rotations this week. Students have done a phenomenol job completing their independent activities, allowing one-on-one teacher time to occur.

Today in math, we reviewed adding doubles. Students should be able to automatically state the answers to doubles: 1+1, 2+2 etc. This will become more important as we move into harder addition problems next week. Today, we drew and painted pictures to help us recall these facts.

We also brainstormed about writing about what we know. Students were challenged to think about something that happened to them today at school. They then had to draw incredibly detailed pictures and start writing about them. We learned how writing about what you know can develop into exciting stories!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday.

January will be a busy month in grade 2! As always, there is lots going on!

In math, we are beginning our focus on addition and subtraction. Over the next few weeks, students will be practicing different stratgies for adding and subtracting numbers up to 18. Today, we began by working on a group problem and then practiced playing ten-frame games. Recignizing numbers and number combinations is an important skill.
We also started talking about the Arctic and Nunavut. Our next Social Studies unit will take us to an Inuit Community. Students had to brainstorm and draw pictures of what they already knew about this topic. We then used Google maps to locate where Iqualit is.

Wrapping Paper and Math games

Students started the day by joining in Christmas Carol singing with the school. This will continue over the next three days. It was a great way to start the day!

We worked on a great writing project: The night Santa got stuck in the chimney. In math, students practiced their addition by completing a math christmas tree and then having a choice of math games to play.

This afternoon we brought out the paint and made some beautiful wrapping paper!

Crossing the River

The students did an amazing job yesterday at the Christmas Concert! Thank you to all the family members that came out to support the Grade 2 'Frosty's' !

Today, we played a fun math game. Students had 12 tiles to place on numbers 1 - 12. They then rolled two dice. The numbers were then added together - if the sum matched one of the numbers with a tile on it, student's could move that tile 'across the river'. As a group, we solved a math problem using the addition strategy "2 more".

We also received a very special mail package from the North Pole!

Winter Painting

Today, students worked on a beautiful painting project. They used the paint colours white, black, red and blue to mix different shades of blues and purples to create a winter night sky. Tomorrow, we will add a silhoutted Christmas tree - you can see the artwork at the Christmas concert on Wednesday!

We also enjoyed our pita lunch, practiced subitizing and solving word problems and fixed up some mixed up sentences.

For the Christmas concert, I am asking that students wear a white shirt and dark pants. The rest of the costume has been made in class.

Writing Letters to Santa

Today, we mailed our letters to Santa. The grade 2's had worked on thinking about questions to ask Santa, sharing some personal information about themselves and making sure to politely ask him for a present. We also practiced a step-by-step drawing of him as well!

Thank you to all the parents who have come to Parent-Teacher conferences so far. It is very much appreciated! Parents are the first and best teacher for our students.
