Text to Self Connections
Our school theme this year is looking at "What is my dream?".
Today, we read a book about a little girl's dream and then made some Text to Self Connections. That means that students can think of something they have experienced in their life that relates to the book we are reading. This is an important part of becoming a 'super reader'!
We also voted on where to hang our 2 class dreamcatchers - stay tuned for some student created ones coming in the next few weeks!

Going to the library and sorting books
Today we went to the library for the first time!
Our library day is Wednesday. In grade one, students can take out one library book. Books are due back the next week.
We also spent time this morning sorting the books in our class library. We talked about how it is easy to find a book you like if you know where to look!

Creating patterns and observing a tree
In math, we are working on creating and describing patterns. Today we talked about using letters to label our patterns. Students then worked on creating a variety of different patterns using different categories.
For science, we read a book about the changing seasons, watched a video showing a tree going through all 4 seasons and then went outside to sketch a 'summer' tree in our science journals.

Spirit Day, Pancake Breakfast and Terry Fox Run
Friday was an exciting day at Banting and Best! We had a wonderful turnout for our Pancake breakfast; students enjoyed having a pancake snack!
The rest of the morning included participating in a joint Sherwood/Banting and Best assembly, making a class poster and running to remember Terry Fox. It was a great day!

Using our science journals and read to self
Students received their science journals today. Our class will be attending Nature School in March - part of that preparation work invovles documenting what we see.
We went outside and students had to find one thing to sketch and observe.
We are also practicing how to read to our selves. Each student has their own book bin and we are able to read for 4 minutes independently right now! This is something we practice every day.

Sorting our beautiful stuff
Thank you so much for all of the 'beautiful' stuff that came into the classroom today!
In math, students practiced sorting their 'stuff' into different categories. As a group, we practiced sorting items by colour and shape. Student's worked in pairs to sort their items.
