Welcome to Grade One!

Welcome back to Banting and Best for the 2013-2014 school year! 

School begins on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Students meet in the school yard and find their teacher. Teachers will have copies of class lists. 

School hours:
School starts at 8:20 AM.
Lunch is from 11:53 AM - 12:37 PM.
School ends at 2:57 PM.

Please ensure your child brings the following:
- a lunch and recess snack
- indoor shoes that can be put on independently 
- a water bottle (filled with water only!)

School supplies (pencils, crayons, erasers, rulers) will be provided. Please do not send these items with your child. 

Please note, toys from home are not allowed at school. 

I look forward to meeting all of the students on September 3, 2013! 

Learning about the Acadians

We are conitnuing are look at the Acadians. Today, we started on two projects: creating an Acadian village and weaving the Acadian flag.

We visited an online 'Acadian village', looking at a map and talking about the observations you can make. Students will be working on adding onto their own Acadian village.

The other activity was using yarn to weave the Acadian flag. Students did a great job figuring out how to create their flag.

 

 

 

Tennis Residency

This week, students have started a two week tennis residency. So far, we have worked on bouncing and catching a ball with a racquet, using our racquet to be accurate and using focus and determination to try our best. Check out these new tennis players!

Bug Catchers

We have been learning about insects and their basic needs. Yesterday, students drew their own 'perfect' home that included all the things they needed tio survive: air, water, shelter, food and many other ideas. Today, we read a book about how insects meet their survival needs.

We then created 'bug' catchers - students went outside to build a habitat for their insect and spent the afternoon looking for bugs!

 

 

 

Insect Investigation

Today, we had an in-class field trip where we learned all about insects while solving a mystery. It was a great morning filled with lots of learning!

Sharing about our animal

Last Friday we had a sharing assembly. 4 students worked hard to write a speech, practice it and present it to the school. The class gave great feedback on using expression, speaking with a loud voice and looking at the audience. They gave an awesome performance!


Students have also been working on reserach projects for our science unit, Small Crawling and Flying Animals. Today we talked about making an information poster. Students were given a checklist to follow and got started!

Saving not one but TWO animals!

We had a very exciting day yesterday in Room 6. Students have been working hard to create posters, collect juice boxes and sorting through a lot of pennies to raise $40.00 to donate towards the World Wildlife fund to 'save the arctic fow'.

Yesterday we rolled up all of the coins and figured out the final total.....which was $73.00! Because of their efforts, the students received a last minute donation of $7.00. This means our class has raised $80.00 and we cna now send money to save the Arctic Fox and the Grey Wolf.

It was so exciting to see the student's reactions when we realized this!
